Sandbridge Ocean Rescue Association

Lifeguards are on duty every day from 9:30 to 6 throughout the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day) at two Sandbridge Beach locations: across from Sandbridge Market and at Little Island District Park.

Lifeguards also drive dune buggies to patrol the rest of the beach throughout the day.

Are Dogs Allowed on the Beach in Sandbridge?

Yes! Your pup is welcome on the beach before 10 AM and after 6 PM during the summertime. The beach is defined as the north end of Virginia Beach above 42nd Street or south of Rudee Loop (Sandbridge and Croatan). The boardwalk is under the same summer restrictions for pets. Dogs, unfortunately, are prohibited between 42nd St and Rudee Loop (Virginia Beach City Area) at all times during the summer months. During the off season, however, dogs are welcome on the beach anytime!

Keep your pet on a leash no longer than six feet at all times to protect wildlife and prevent your pet from getting lost, and never leave your pet unattended (dogs must be leashed at all times within Virginia Beach city limits on any city sidewalk, street, or public right-of-way). Be mindful of the weather, as animals can overheat easily, and make sure to bring plenty of water!

The ocean can be unpredictable, and dogs are not only shorter but can also be a lot weaker than an adult swimmer. If you're planning on taking your pooch to the beach, consider outfitting them with a life jacket. Don’t forget that your pet will be walking on hot sand and asphalt and doesn't have any sandals or shoes to protect his paws unless you bring them! His nose and exposed skin can also get sunburned, so take a few moments to look for pet-safe sunscreen to keep him safe and well cared for while enjoying a vacation with you!

Sandbridge Public Beach Access Points (North to South)

Sandfiddler Road offers public beach access points along the length of Sandbridge Beach. There is limited free public parking along the road and on side streets, but it fills quickly, so we recommend walking from your vacation rental if possible.

NOTE: Pets cannot enter the park through Back Bay. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Please clean up after your pet.

Trash Collection Schedules

Trash is picked up every Tuesday all year round, with a second collection day on Saturday between Memorial and Labor Day. All trash must be placed inside the bin. Trash left outside of the bin will not be collected. Recycling is collected every Saturday and every other Tuesday during the summer, and every other Tuesday in the offseason. Condos have their own pick-up service, please refer to your rental packet for more information.

Please make sure that the trash cans are put out no earlier than 5 PM the night before and rolled back to the house as soon as possible after it’s picked up – houses with cans that are not rolled back the day of collection are in violation of city ordinance.
