Driving to your vacation spot can be a great way to travel. It allows you to pack far more than you would be able to take on a flight: canoes, fishing poles, and the like are easy to strap to the roof of a car, but more than a hassle to get through security!
But the downside to driving is that it can mean long hours stuck in the car - and worse, traffic.
Sandbridge Beach is smaller and more isolated than its big sister, Virginia Beach, but that doesn't mean it's completely without traffic and travel inconveniences to visitors who choose to travel by car. But worry not! We'll be going through the things to look for, avoid, and how to utilize the tools available to you to not only arrive in Sandbridge promptly, but to navigate it throughout your stay!
Sandpiper Road
The main road through Sandbridge Beach, Sandpiper Road can get quite backed up (especially on weekends). While the normal recommendation would be to find an alternate route to your destination, Sandbridge Beach only has two roads that can be used interchangeably to get you where you need to go: Sandpiper Road and Sandfiddler Road. Most others are dead ends leading out towards the water.
The best advice we can give you is to plan to either start your trip extremely early or extremely late if you want to beat the traffic. If you're early, there are places like the AdventureWorks Zipline Park to explore while you wait for your vacation rental to be ready. If you decide to arrive in the evening, there are plenty of restaurants that can satisfy any dinner cravings you may have. Check out our list of the top six restaurants Sandbridge locals love if you want our recommendations!
Sandfiddler Road
Colloquially called "the beach road," Sandfiddler Road is always bustling with people coming to or from the beach itself.
That means it's always got pedestrians walking along it, and unfortunately Sandfiddler does not have any shoulders, which consequentially means that pedestrians will be walking in the street, rather than alongside it. They're not always easy to spot, especially when it's dark. So be vigilant, and give lots of extra room to anyone walking on the asphalt. People can be unpredictable, and a car is always going to beat a human's resilience.
Utilize the Virginia Traffic Information Website
Google Maps may have your back for most of the drive, but the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) maintains a website with up to date information on road closures and road work, traffic accidents, and weather closures. It even has togglable buttons for exit numbers, rest areas, EV charging station locations, and cameras (active and inactive)!
VDOT is a great way to prep for your journey. It's even integrated with Waze, allowing citizens to report real-time information that can be used to help make your travel as smooth and efficient as possible.
Your Ticket to Paradise, With Ease
While driving to your Sandbridge Beach vacation rental may come with the potential for traffic delays, proper planning and the use of helpful tools like VDOT’s traffic website can ensure a smoother trip. Once you arrive, you'll have the perfect balance of beachside relaxation and local attractions. If you're still looking for the ideal place to stay, consider booking through Sandbridge Blue Realty, known for its excellent properties and customer service, to make your vacation even more enjoyable. Safe travels and happy beach days ahead!
